The Annapolis Dragon Boat Club
In 1996, Dr. Don McKenzie, a Canadian Sports Medicine Physician, demonstrated (in a controlled study) that the
motion of paddling in a dragon boat reduces swelling from lymphedema and accelerates physical recovery after breast cancer treatments.
For that reason, ALC has supported and partnered with the Annapolis Dragon Boat Club (ADBC) since the club’s inception. Over 15 of our patients have jumped on board with ADBC to reclaim their physical and spiritual center after their cancer treatment.
Today, dragon boating is an international phenomenon, with breast cancer survivors (BCS) at the forefront. Every four years, more than
2000 survivors from around the world gather to compete and celebrate at the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC) Festival. ADBC has traveled to Ft Lauderdale, Italy and New Zealand
for this powerful event. The club also competes in many stateside festivals during the summer. Their membership is open to anyone – not just survivors – who is looking for fun, fitness and friendship.
